Of all the modalities I use with clients and have trained in over the past decade, Emotional Freedom Technique [EFT] is in my experience by far the most deep, profound and powerful. The shifts I have witnessed both in myself and with clients is phenomenal, especially with the addition of Matrix Reimprinting.

EFT interrupts our thought and behavioural patterns, liberating us from disruptive or painful cycles in our lives. It takes the roof off our lens of awareness and the way we see the world, expanding our ideas of who we can be, what we can create and what we are worthy of receiving. It targets the foundation of beliefs we hold about ourselves and the world which make us feel unsafe or limited.

As a psychosomatic tool, it uses the body’s memory and wisdom to connect dots of how and when we made decisions and created beliefs that make us feel not good enough and allows us to clear stuck or stagnant energy and stress held in the body. It acts not only on the conscious mind but also on the subconscious mind, body and nervous system to resolve and radically free ourselves from our past wounds in a way we likely haven’t experienced before. All this enables us to live with greater freedom and understanding, calling in fresh possibilities for ourselves: new perspectives, enhanced self awareness and compassion, more connected relationships, purpose and impact and much more.

how it works

EFT can be described as acupuncture without the needles as we tap on acupressure points in the body whilst talking about a particular traumatic event from the past or things in our lives which we find stressful. The process of tapping targets the end of the body’s meridian channels (inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine and other medical traditions) allowing energy to flow where it has been blocked by stress, repressed emotion or trauma. This helps us to alleviate pain, tension and identify and clear emotions or sensations we are holding in association with such issues.

It also works on the subconscious brain, switching off the amygdala, the body’s ‘fire alarm’ system which is on the look out for potential threat. The amygdala is activated not only in times of physical threat but also when we experience emotional disregulation - triggers, insecurity, deadlines, challenging emails, recalling past events - and in turn it mobilises the fight or flight response, pumping cortisol and adrenaline around the body to help us escape danger. Ongoing stress impacts the body in profound ways. EFT instructs the mind, body and nervous system that it is safe even when recalling a stressful experience, allowing us to come back to balance.

Traumas or triggers are not just a cognitive experience but a somatic and autonomic experience, meaning that they impact the body and nervous system. We FEEL our experiences and have somatic experiences when our past hurts or insecurities (AKA potential threats) are triggered: for example our throat closing up when we have to public speak, butterflies in our belly when we get nervous, hotness on the skin when we get angry, heaviness in the heart when we are sad. EFT uses a multi-pronged attack to resolve our past hurts, traumas and current stresses on a psychosomatic mind-body level.

It also seeks to get the ROOT CAUSE of why we feel the way we feel, using the body’s memory to trace back to decisions or beliefs we made in the past to keep us safe but now affect us negatively. By returning to the origins of our issues, we can resolve and clear in new ways and thus collapse timelines on our healings and unsubscribing to paradigms we no longer want to carry as baggage.

eft and trauma

EFT is a practice increasingly used with symptoms of trauma, PTSD, complex PTSD, depression and anxiety.

Trauma does not just happen to the mind. Trauma also happens to the body. If you look at an animal in the world who escapes from danger, you will notice that they shake off the charge activated within the body by the nervous system. We become ‘traumatised’ when we experience too much too soon, too much all at once and when we weren’t able to fully fight or flee from the experience. We might have been powerless within the situation and a part of us gets “stuck”.

On an energetic level the charge of the trauma becomes stuck in the body and the part of the brain connected to that event thinks it is still happening in the present, like a subconscious open-loop. We fragment ourselves in order to be able to carry on and survive but the impact of this is that it can stop us from feeling ‘whole’ or ‘complete’ and being highly sensitised to associated events in the present which trigger the trauma.

EFT helps to tell the body that the event is over; not that it never happened but that we are safe in the here and now so the body and nervous system can regulate. In essentially ‘completing’ the past event in our mind and body, there is opportunity to move forward and we can seek to let go of hurt, anger, guilt or shame and importantly to forgive ourselves or others for the sake of our own wellbeing.

Trauma is not just limited to big events. It can be simple even negligible things in the past like being told off at school or misunderstanding a situation as a child from which we made decisions or beliefs about ourselves and the world that become our lens of perception. EFT allows us to make new decisions and beliefs.
