Today I am joined by Sarah Newland, an Australian clinical nutritionist with a holistic approach using ‘food as medicine’. Gut health is at the root of our overall wellbeing and vitality. It affects most things in the body as well as the brain. In our modern world of stress and processed food, maintaining a healthy gut takes effort. So many people aren’t even aware that they are experiencing gut-health related issues nor how good they could really feel! Certainly gut health issues are no fun: bloating, IBS symptoms, anxiety, poor energy, weight issues… the list goes on. In this podcast, Sarah gives us a full gut health 101 but we also try to cut through the noise and complexity to empower you in your understanding, health and healing to take radical self ownership of your lifestyle and wellbeing, all starting in the gut.

In this episode:
- gut health in relation to your immune system, weight and hormones
- gut-brain-axis and relation to mental health, including anxiety and depression and emotional wellbeing
- symptoms of gut disturbances & what we regard as ‘normal’ even though it can indicate poor gut health
- cravings: how our pathogenic gut bacteria omit chemicals to tell our brain to eat sugar which enable them to grow
- how early-life factors such as the birth process and antibiotic use can affect our gut health
- the big DOs and DON’Ts of gut health: healing and sealing our gut and then supporting the proliferation of good gut bacteria and the reduction of pathogenic bacteria
- the importance of managing stress and integrating lifestyle habits to relax our system and tonify the vagus nerve
- tips on how to get started and the mindset required around investing our time, money and energy in our health as far as we can

“Our health can be determined by the strength of our immune system and 70% of our immune system resides in the gut. So your immunity stems largely from your gut health. And the strength of your gut also depends on bio-diversity of microbial populations so you want to make sure there’s more good than bad. The absence of inflammation in the gut is also super important.”
- Sarah Newland
